But, what is Canine Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis in dogs is a degenerative process that develops in the joints due to the disappearance of cartilage and the appearance of certain protuberances inside of the bone called osteophytes.
There are two types of arthritis: primary arthritis, which is caused by natural joint wear, and secondary arthritis, which is caused by factors that have nothing to do with age, like deformities or obesity. Another factor is genetics: some breeds are more likely to have the disease than others. It is important to have a strict diet to avoid weight gain, make sure your dog gets enough exercise, and make frequent visits to the vet.
Symptoms are diverse and painful, so your dog may seem irritable or lose his appetite. It is common for the dog to start limping, have problems getting up after a long nap or complain if you try to pet him.
When the pain is persistent, the treatment will consist of anti-inflammatory medication and analgesics, as well as personalized exercises. Palliative treatments are extremely important. Even though they do not cure the disease, they minimize pain and give the dog a better quality of life. These treatments reduce central sensitization, the excessive stimulation of the nervous system, which causes isolated pain to be generally experienced all over the body.
Nowadays, there are certain medicines in the market that focus on the cartilage and have led to positive results. The best thing to do is to be guided by a professional in order to select the best option for your dog.
In advanced cases of arthritis, surgery is the only option. The veterinarian will remove the parts that are causing pain and, if necessary, implant prostheses. This procedure is should only be chosen as a last resort.
Humidity and cold weather make arthritis worse, so it´s important to purchase things that will protect your dog from the cold weather. There are all sorts of products that can keep him warm: blankets and thermal coats, protectors for his joints, or special beds. No matter the situation, the first step is always to get your vet’s opinion.
