Dogs most developed sense
It’s considered a fundamental element of communication, by smelling tracks of smells they can get to know and connect with other dogs, other animals and humans. Dogs sense of smell is extraordinary, it’s 10,000 times more sensitive than their taste. It helps them survive when they are first born since it’s the only sense that it’s developed and helps them find food.
A dog’s sense of smell is based on a combination of two elements: a determined anatomy and a great olfactory memory. The surface of the nasal cavity membrane is larger than ours, something that affects how many odor receptors they have. In comparison to humans, dogs can have between 145 and 295 million more receptors, which vary depending on the breed.
They also have amazing olfactory memory. It can reach an area of 150 centimeters squared, 145 more than humans. In this sense, they can distinguish a personal object that’s beside other objects that are the same, something that’s impossible for humans to do.
Dogs can smell a bunch of scents that we can’t; these can change the way the act or behave and even make them ignore our orders. Smelling is the way they get to know the world, making it so important to let them smell when we take them out for walks.
How a dog’s sense of smell helps humans
Besides being our best friends and guardians, dogs have been essential in certain areas of our lives thanks to their developed sense of smell.
Dogs have a great tracking capacity, which has made them indispensable while searching for something. For example, when a catastrophe occurs they help rescue teams find people. They also help officials find explosives, drugs, flammable fuels, fake money and more.
Recently this ability has extended into the medicine field, there have been news that testify that dogs are able to detect diabetes and cancer using their sense of smell. In medicine, there is a lot that can still be explored when it comes to this subject. We are sure that what’s discovered will surprise us.
